COSPAR Capacity Building in Latin America: past, present and future
Carlos Gabriel
1
1 - Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).
Resumen:
COSPAR's global capacity building programme started precisely in Latin America, in Brazil, with a workshop on X-ray astronomy in 2001. Aimed particularly at developing countries through the organisation of highly practical workshops, it was extended worldwide and to all space science disciplines. More than 40 workshops have meanwhile been organised in 22 countries, including 12 in 7 Latin American countries, which have benefited from the strengthening of scientific activities in hitherto largely unexplored fields. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of the workshops, the results achieved so far, as well as plans for the immediate future, including the establishment of a new type of capacity building based on the development of collaborative programmes in the area of small satellites.

Resumen:
Most of the astrotourism activities along the Andean Region are currently being conducted by small entreperneurships based on big cities as well as in rural regions with very little or null support from universities and professional astronomers. With the aim to promote a platform for dialogues between entreperneurs and experts in astrotourism, the Regional Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU) in collaboration with the Escuela Politecnica Nacional (Ecuador) constitutes the first andean network of entreperneurs in astrotourism during the III Workshop Astronomia en los Andes : “Engaged communities in development through Astrotourism”. In this contribution we describe the structure of this andean network of entreperneurs and possible channels for supporting them in short and medium term.

Resumen:
Throughout history, Astronomy marked the lives of human beings in diverse ways. The approach to the starry sky was important from the ritual and daily ceremonial point of view and occupied a good part of the activity of all people on Earth. Although we have fragments of knowledge of the peoples of the past, we know that astronomy allowed us to establish patterns that became part of universal culture: compass, clock, calendar, intangible heritage of humanity, according to the UNESCO declaration of 2007. Bridges between cultures, is the annual proposal of the Astronomy Education Network in the School (NASE) associated with the UNESCO call for May 16th, the International Day of Light. This activity aims, hand in hand with universal astronomical themes, ancestral knowledge, discoveries of the modern era and great challenges of science dedicated to the study of the “light” that arrives from the Cosmos, to reestablish the links that identify us as a species. In this presentation we will show the topics addressed in recent years, the indicators that allow evaluating the impact of the activities proposals and the testimonies of participants who constitute diverse audiences that come, many times for the first time, to the discipline that, without a doubt, constitutes that universal language that It even allows us to write our stories in and thanks to the stars.
